Newtons Cradle Large

The Newton’s Cradle toy is constructed from five gold coloured metal pendulums next to one another. Each pendulum is attached to the surrounding gold metal frame by two strings of equal length, which are angled away from each other. This string arrangement restricts the pendulums' movements to the same plane.

Pull the pendulums on the edge away from the others and release, sending them crashing into one another and demonstrating the power of kinetic energy. As one hits the next this energy is passed through the line of pendulums to the one on the opposite end, sending it flying out into the air, to come back in again and repeat the process.

Whether for yourself or as a present for a science-loving friend or relative the Newton’s Cradle is a hypnotic and entertaining desk toy. Once you’ve started the chain reaction it takes a long while for it to slow down and stop. Also, as it does this it gets softer and the lovely ticking sound quieter so it’s actually quite relaxing too.
